SetP Stanikas Lithuanians, b. 1961 and 1962
Svajonė and Paulius Stanikas build installations in which images move between media, accumulating meanings no single work could hold alone.
Svajonė and Paulius Stanikas (SetP Stanikas) are a Lithuanian artist duo working across photography, film, sculpture, drawing and installation. Since beginning their collaboration in the late 1980s, they have developed an interdisciplinary practice in which sculpture, drawing, photography and film operate less as separate disciplines than as parts of a single body of work.
Their work has been presented internationally, including at the 50th Venice Biennale, Venice (Italy); the Liverpool, Moscow and Beijing Biennials; Centre Pompidou, Paris (France); Jeu de Paume, Paris (France); Grand Palais, Paris (France); Galerie Vu, Paris (France); and White Box, New York (USA). In 2017 they were awarded the Lithuanian National Prize for Culture and Arts.
Svajonė Stanikienė graduated in Ceramics from the Vilnius Academy of Arts, Vilnius (Lithuania), in 1987. Paulius Stanikas graduated in Economics from Vilnius University, Vilnius (Lithuania), in 1985. Since 2000 they have lived and worked between Paris and Vilnius.
Svajonė and Paulius Stanikas are represented by Galerija VARTAI.

ARTISTIC PRACTICE
Working collaboratively across multiple media, Svajonė and Paulius Stanikas build exhibitions in which sculpture, drawing, photography and film function as interconnected parts of a single installation. Rather than assigning a fixed role to each medium, they allow images to circulate between them. A sculptural figure reappears in a photograph, a photograph becomes material for a film, while recurring characters and motifs unfold across the exhibition.
The body occupies a central place throughout their work. Frequently using themselves as protagonists, the artists stage carefully constructed scenes that draw on religious painting and cinema while introducing images of desire, violence, vulnerability and mortality. Their works resist stable interpretation, allowing contradiction to remain active rather than resolving into a single narrative.
Across four decades of collaboration, the Stanikas have developed a practice that unfolds most fully at the scale of the exhibition. Individual works gain meaning through their relationship to one another, as repeated images, recurring figures and shifting viewpoints transform each installation into a single, continuous composition.
