Vytautas Stakutis-TRAFIK Lithuanian, b. 1990

Overview

Vytautas Stakutis–TRAFIK paints the parts of the city that are usually passed without notice.

Vytautas Stakutis–TRAFIK is a Lithuanian painter and illustrator based in Vilnius. Working from photographs taken during long walks through the city, he transforms overlooked fragments of the urban landscape into paintings that shift between observation and invention. Damaged cars, roadworks, discarded objects, and temporary structures become the protagonists of compositions that are at once familiar and quietly strange.

Rather than searching for exceptional subjects, TRAFIK works with what everyday movement tends to overlook. His paintings slow the pace of the city, allowing ordinary objects to acquire unexpected presence through colour, composition, and subtle visual displacement. Humour and tenderness emerge without sentimentality, giving overlooked things an unexpected dignity.

Vytautas Stakutis–TRAFIK studied Graphic Design at the Vilnius College of Technologies and Design. Alongside painting, his practice includes illustration and public art, while maintaining a consistent visual language built around simplified form, strong colour, and close observation of the urban environment.

Biography

ARTISTIC PRACTICE

Vytautas Stakutis–TRAFIK begins with the city at walking speed. Rather than looking towards landmarks or monuments, he pays attention to the temporary and the peripheral: roadworks, abandoned vehicles, construction materials, fences, broken infrastructure, and the small visual incidents that accumulate within everyday movement.

Photography provides the initial encounter, but painting gradually separates the image from documentation. Objects are simplified, colours intensified, and relationships subtly displaced until the familiar begins to feel slightly improbable. The city remains recognisable, yet no longer behaves according to ordinary expectations.

Humour enters the work through these quiet shifts. An overturned car appears ready to continue its journey, detached bodywork resembles suspended skin, while worn car seats begin to echo the gestures of human bodies. These transformations never abandon the object itself; they reveal the imaginative possibilities already contained within it.

Across his paintings, the urban landscape is treated less as scenery than as a living archive of everyday experience. By returning attention to things usually passed without notice, TRAFIK suggests that the character of a city is formed not only by its architecture but by the overlooked objects that quietly sustain its daily life.
