The future whispers of strange, unpredictable times ahead. We live in a world where old structures are collapsing; we inevitably encounter social inequality, geopolitical conflicts, and ecological crises. Some call this era the dawn of a new stage. The previous period — marked by colonialism, territorial expansion, a linear and exploitative relationship with time and nature — has come to an end. It is being replaced by a state filled with anticipation for something new and unfamiliar.
This shift can be felt in everyday life through the prioritization of unique, handmade objects, the renewed significance of folk narratives and religious motifs, the flourishing of organic forms and materials, and the ethical use of resources in production. We live in a time that predicts a new beginning, yet we are still stuck in waiting.
Designers, caught in the cycles of domestic life, are often visited by visions. In these visions, they speculate about the inevitable future — its materiality, colors, and forms. Intuitively, they attempt to reconnect with the natural world and its resources. They develop new systems of thought, considering the planet as a whole. These future visions are strange, intriguing, still elusive, yet gradually taking shape in the artifacts of everyday life. Through playful speculation, designers aim to show an optimistic future. Perhaps this optimism is a way to survive present?
In the exhibition Domestic Visions, designers create a room of the future — filled with visions of the everyday life of times to come. These visions not only respond to today's challenges but also imagine a future where the human being and their choices are no longer at the center. They invite us to radically rethink our relationships with each other and the natural world and to sense an inevitably approaching future — one filled with optimistic ideas about the world.
