Nocturnal Creatures is a photography project capturing the night-time lives of individuals in sprawling metropolises. Whether at parties, attending art events, or simply wandering the streets, these subjects represent the diverse human activities that occur after dark. "Through these people, I wanted to tell my own story," explains the artist. The images are not staged but emerge from street photography, with the artist later manipulating the scenes—removing backgrounds and adding narrative elements. As a result, the figures appear as actors on a theater stage, narrating their own stories of New York at night.
Vytenis Jankūnas, a Lithuanian-American artist, primarily uses photography as his medium in recent works, which include photo and video installations, books, and exhibitions. With a Master’s in Sculpture and Education from the Lithuanian State Art Institute (Vilnius Art Academy), Jankūnas has exhibited widely across Lithuania, the U.S., and Europe. His work has been shown at Vilnius Contemporary Art Centre, and he has held solo exhibitions in New York City. In 2020, he won first place in the Self-Published Books category at the International Photography Awards (IPA) and received a Fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts. He was also a finalist at the Sony World Photography Awards for Street Photography and Architecture. Jankūnas currently lives and works in New York City.
