Vytenis Jankūnas Lithuanian, b. 1961
Vytenis Jankūnas approaches photography as a way of extending time beyond the single image.
Vytenis Jankūnas is a Lithuanian visual artist based in New York whose work moves between photography, video, installation, and artist's books. Drawing on everyday experience, he examines how documentary images can be expanded beyond the isolated moment, allowing duration and observation to become visible within a single frame.
Working largely from his daily journeys through New York, Jankūnas records ordinary encounters that are later digitally reconfigured through multiple exposures and layered compositions. Rather than treating photography as a fixed document, he constructs images that unfold across time, questioning how reality is perceived, remembered, and represented.
Vytenis Jankūnas studied sculpture at the Vilnius Academy of Arts before relocating to New York in 1995. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Contemporary Art Centre (Vilnius), Sotheby's New Galleries (New York), Anthology Film Archives (New York), Tallinn Art Hall (Tallinn), and Galerija VARTAI (Vilnius).
His photographs and installations are held in the collections of the National Gallery of Art (Vilnius), MO Museum (Vilnius), Noewe Foundation (Vilnius), and the M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art (Kaunas).
Vytenis Jankūnas is represented by Galerija VARTAI.

ARTISTIC PRACTICE
Vytenis Jankūnas approaches photography as a medium capable of exceeding its own documentary limits. Rather than isolating a single instant, his images are built through the accumulation of multiple moments, allowing time itself to become part of the photographic surface.
Much of the work begins with ordinary situations encountered during daily life, particularly within the New York subway. People and urban movement become the raw material for photographs that are later digitally layered into single compositions. These interventions do not abandon documentary observation but expand it, suggesting durations and relationships that cannot be contained within a single exposure.
Throughout his practice, Jankūnas has consistently moved across artistic disciplines while maintaining a single underlying concern: how images construct reality rather than simply record it.
The resulting photographs occupy an ambiguous position between document and construction. Familiar urban scenes remain recognisable while quietly exceeding photographic description, inviting viewers to reconsider the relationship between observation, memory, and time.
