This drawing from the series Vilnius in Graphite Dust offers Mindaugas Lukošaitis’s digital interpretation of Vilnius across centuries. Created in celebration of the city’s 700th anniversary, the series reflects Lukošaitis’ unique vision, blending precise architectural detail with surreal imagination.
Art critic V. Kinčinaitis describes Lukošaitis as “painting Vilnius like a fantasizing Freemason.” Each drawing meticulously captures the essence of Vilnius’s Old Town, depicting stone foundations, baroque cornices, and the “steps of the Gothic moon.” Through these elements, Lukošaitis merges graphite’s raw texture with the fluidity of a digital stylus, creating scenes where the city’s ancient past merges with imagined future ruins. Surreal events unfold in uncanny detail, like the flood of the Neris extinguishing a fire in Lazdynai.
Mindaugas Lukošaitis (b. 1980) has gained international acclaim for his distinctive style, which combines traditional drawing techniques with digital media to reinterpret historical themes. His work has been showcased in numerous international exhibitions, including the 26th São Paulo Biennial, where he represented Lithuania alongside his brother, Gintautas. His large-scale series of drawings is part of the collection at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark, solidifying his place in the contemporary art scene. Lukošaitis was also featured in Vitamin D, Phaidon’s celebrated anthology of groundbreaking artists in contemporary drawing, which introduced him as one of the most intriguing illustrators of his generation.
