Exhibited in the altar crafted by a Spanish manufacturer of altars El Angelo, these are the teeth of the lioness who protected St. Thecla after the governor condemned her to be eaten by the wild beasts in the arena. Thecla, who lived sometime in the 1st century AD in the city of Iconium, is known as a lustful virgin saint who dedicated her love and desire to St. Paul and, with her devotion, inspired the trend of virginity in Christianity. Her fictional biography is added to the sculptural composition as part of the work. In the Christian tradition, first-class relics are body fragments of a saint, therefore, holy bodies are usually dismembered.
