Asia.Europa by Lithuanian artist duo Svajonė and Paulius Stanikas (SetP Stanikas) has been showcased in prestigious venues, including the Venice Biennale, where they represented Lithuania, as well as the Pompidou Centre and Vu’ Gallery in Paris, and has been featured in numerous art books and press. This striking diptych merges East and West, exploring themes of identity, conflict, and transformation through contrasting cultural symbols and materials. Known for their multidisciplinary approach, the Stanikas blend painting, sculpture, and photography to create a darkly romantic and surreal visual language. In Asia.Europa, they evoke both decay and renewal, capturing broader cultural and existential dialogues.
Svajonė Stanikienė (b. 1961, Lithuania) graduated from the Vilnius Academy of Arts with a degree in ceramics in 1987. She has been a member of the Lithuanian Artists’ Association since 1991 and joined the Lithuanian Photographers’ Association in 2004.
Paulius Stanikas (b. 1962, Lithuania) earned a degree in economics from Vilnius University in 1985. Like Svajonė, he became a member of the Lithuanian Artists’ Association in 1991 and the Lithuanian Photographers’ Association in 2004.
The artist duo, based between Paris and Vilnius, is renowned for their provocative and often controversial work. Their art delves into themes of eroticism, death, and aggression, crafting allegorical and associative narratives. Initially working with sculpture, they expanded to include drawings and photography, often using themselves as subjects to intensify the viewer's emotional response, eliciting shock and psychological discomfort. Known as SetP Stanikas, the duo has been actively exhibiting since 1988 and remains among Lithuania’s most dynamic artists, their creative partnership spanning over three decades.
