Robertas Narkus Lithuanian, b. 1983

Overview

Robertas Narkus uses existing systems as artistic material, allowing coincidence, exchange, and collaboration to become forms of production.

Robertas Narkus is a Lithuanian interdisciplinary artist whose practice treats entrepreneurship, organisation, and collaboration as artistic media. Describing his work as the "management of circumstance in an economy of coincidence," he develops projects that operate simultaneously as artworks and functioning systems.

Rather than producing autonomous objects, Narkus works with the mechanisms that already organise contemporary life. Economic exchange, technological infrastructures, and everyday forms of cooperation become the material through which his projects develop. Existing systems are neither simply criticised nor accepted; they are redirected into new situations that combine practical function with speculation, humour, and uncertainty.

Based in Vilnius, Robertas Narkus studied Photography and Media Art at the Vilnius Academy of Arts before continuing at the Sandberg Instituut in Amsterdam. In 2022 he represented Lithuania at the 59th Venice Biennale with Gut Feeling, and in 2025 completed a practice-based PhD at the Vilnius Academy of Arts. His work has been presented internationally at institutions including the Contemporary Art Centre (Vilnius), de Appel (Amsterdam), Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam), Whitechapel Gallery (London), David Dale Gallery (Glasgow), and the Venice Biennale (Venice).

Biography

ARTISTIC PRACTICE

Robertas Narkus approaches artistic practice as the construction of temporary systems. Rather than beginning with a medium, he begins with a situation: an institution, an economy, a social relationship, or a technological process that can be reorganised through artistic means.

Media and methods are determined by the needs of each project rather than by disciplinary boundaries. A fish farm, a café, an engineering camp, an exhibition, or a business model may all become part of the same work. The artwork exists not only as an object but as the network of exchanges, negotiations, and unforeseen events that allow it to function.

Humour occupies an important place within the practice. Speculation and deliberate misuse become strategies for exposing the hidden logic of contemporary systems. Rather than offering direct critique, Narkus constructs situations that remain operational while quietly revealing the contradictions embedded within them.

Across projects, coincidence is treated less as chance than as a working method. By allowing unexpected relationships to emerge between people, institutions, and objects, Narkus produces works that remain inseparable from the conditions that produce them.
