Liucija Pačkauskaitė Lithuanian, b. 1999

Overview

Liucija Pačkauskaitė paints from memory, allowing ordinary places to expand beyond observation into something quietly mythic.

Liucija Pačkauskaitė is a Lithuanian painter whose work explores the shifting relationship between memory and observation. Working from landscapes, plants, animals, and everyday places drawn from personal experience, she investigates how recollection gradually transforms the ordinary into something imagined.

Rather than reconstructing remembered scenes, Pačkauskaitė embraces the quiet distortions through which memory enlarges, softens, or rearranges experience. Familiar landscapes become subtly estranged, while commonplace objects acquire an almost symbolic presence. Her paintings move between autobiography and visual fiction, reflecting on how memory continues to reshape the places we believe we know.

Based in Vilnius, Liucija Pačkauskaitė completed both her BA and MA in Painting at the Vilnius Academy of Arts. Her recent solo exhibitions include Ties kriokliais (2024) and Švinta (2023), and alongside her artistic practice she has co-curated exhibitions including Ruja (2023) and Žarija (2024). Liucija

Biography

ARTISTIC PRACTICE

Pačkauskaitė paints from memory rather than observation, and her compositions register the difference directly: scale shifts, proportions exaggerate, a pond reads as larger than it was, a stream takes on the force of a waterfall. These distortions are not stylistic choices layered onto the image but a record of how the memory itself arrived - already altered, already enlarged in places, faded in others.
She works in restrained compositions and muted colour, allowing the subject matter - landscapes, animals, plants, fragments of a rural childhood - to carry the unevenness of recollection without further embellishment. The result sits close to lived experience without functioning as documentation of it.
For Pačkauskaitė, painting does not preserve a memory so much as register how it has already changed by the time it reaches the canvas.
