On October 11, at the LNDM Pranas Domšaitis Gallery in Klaipėda, a new exhibition titled "Flower, Fruit, and Thorn Pieces" will open. Curator Akvilė Anglickaitė invites visitors to reflect on the role of nature, specifically plants, in the work of contemporary artists.
Plants cannot speak. They do not complain or bleed. They don't resist when they're picked or enjoyed, when they're observed, planted, or uprooted. They have roots, turn their leaves toward the light, and shrink away from the cold. They are slow, gentle, sometimes thorny, poisonous, or useful. Sometimes they go unnoticed. Sometimes they bloom beyond the organic world, sprawling in our imagination. They step into paintings, screens, entangle themselves in stories, and sow seeds in memory. They support words, become metaphors, and resonate as symbols.
Plants also appear in the works of contemporary creators. Through them, artists speak about the current times, its problems, and feelings. In the works of this exhibition, every phase of a plant’s life becomes a reflection of human experiences. Hands digging into black soil speak of events in Ukraine. Fragile grasses in the concrete corners of Tokyo inspire poetry. Flowers turn into fountains of joy. Game characters are filled with blossoms. Withered leaves measure personal time. Blooming parks, whose green hues cannot be captured by photo materials, reveal voids. "Restored" branches washed ashore speak of human interference in the natural process of decay.
This symbiosis between artists and plants draws a dotted line, both separating and connecting our fragile worlds.
