Overview

CSABA NEMES "THE LAST HOUSE"

EVALDAS JANSAS

OCTOBER 9 - NOVEMBER 6

Openining: October 9th, 18:00

“Vartai” gallery introduces the works of two modern artists known for their public provocations – Csaba Nemes from Hungary and Evaldas Jansas from Lithuania.

Csaba Nemes integrates painting, drawings, film and animation to reflect on the issues of importance to the society – collective and cultural memory, remnants of the socialist past, and the impact of political change on everyday lives of simple folk. The Hungarian artist’s exhibition “The Last House” consists of paintings and a video work titled “Softies”. It focuses on complex relationships between representation and publicity, romantic mass media clichés and social roles. In 2007, Csaba Nemes was chosen to represent his country in the Venice Biennale, but later Hungarian Ministry of Culture overruled the decision, which was conceived as the evidence of censorship, and aim to control and suppress radical art.

Evaldas Jansas, who has been known in Lithuania and Europe as the author of provocative performances and films during the past decade, once again returns to painting – the unrivalled means of embodiment of imagination processes. Canvases and short audio-video works displayed in the exhibition explore the same theme – the power of verbal and visual interpretation determining the durability of cultural constructs, their unpredictable “encounters” and alterations.
