Death by cutting in half –one the cruellest forms of execution. It was developed much earlier but became a popular method in the Middle Ages. To precise, the legends about this method and stories of martyrdom became popular. One of the most graphic stories about the torture of the Apostle Simon the Canaanite, who was cut in half, is described in the Golden Legend. A martyr was hung upside down and cut starting from his crotch. Due to the flow of blood to the head, a martyr does not lose consciousness even in great pain. Consciousness starts to shut down only when a saw reaches the navel, sometimes a person remains conscious even until the saw reaches the diaphragm. When depicting the Apostle Simon, very often there is a saw nearby; besides, after such an impressive execution he was declared a patron saint of sawmills. In the Middle Ages, the square was a symbol of the earth; a wooden torture frame with an oval of three figures is a symbol of joining of the earth and the moon. Mutua caritate (Mutual love) of thetorturers is symbolised by “a saw of friendship” and the martyr’s love towards his torturer which proves his justice and painfully making him a saint.
