View on a Wall
The painting's composition consists of two segments, the room, an enclosed space in which the sculpture "The Thinker" by Auguste Rodin is set in a alcove, and the open, landscape space at the back of the room, where a figure reminiscent of Andrew Wyeth's "Christina's World" is seen. There is also a possible correlation with Gustave Doré's famous painting "Andromeda" chained to a cave, awaiting her destiny. Both segments are based on images seen in reality, the corridor I used to pass every day at Vilnius Academy of Arts and my friend Kamilė on a rocky shore in New Rochelle, like a mermaid thrown out of the water, in 2012, when we were working in New York as bus–girls. The title of the painting refers to Greek mythology. It was a prophecy that King Cepheus must sacrifice his daughter Andromeda to a sea monster to end the plagues that Poseidon sent in revenge. However, as if to bring Greek mythology closer to the present day, the title also contains a reference to an alternative outcome, emergency exit, suggesting that it is us who are creating the narrative and the „prophecies“ of today. Donata Minderytė (b. 1991, Lithuania) is an artist currently living and working in Vilnius. She graduated from the Painting Department of the Vilnius Academy of Arts, obtaining an MA in 2016. Using the concept of visual translation, Minderytė analyzes significant changes in an image as it is transferred from one medium to another. Donata Minderytė has held solo exhibitions at the Vartai Gallery and Gallery Meno Niša in Vilnius and participated in multiple group shows in Lithuania, Austria and the UK. She is also enrolled in an Art PhD programme at the Vilnius Academy of Arts. Her works have been included in various museum collections, such as Kiasma (Helsinki), MOCAK (Kraków), the Noewe Foundation (Vilnius), and Mo Museum (Vilnius).
