Agata Orlovska b. 1998

Overview

Agata Orlovska (b. 1998, Lithuania) is a painter, whose works approach the medium itself from a critical stance, breaking away from the rigidity of the painterly plain and spilling into shapes of art objects, sound, and light installations.

Multimedia works of Orlovska are imbued with layers of references to Western philosophical through ranging from the writings of Sørenas Kierkegaard, Jacques Derrida, and Umberto Eco, at the same time they obtain relevance only here and now in the moment when they are activated by the presence of the spectator. The point of experiential contact permits sedimented layers of the artist’s exploration of painting, its cultural reverberations, and inherent tensions between the artistic intention and the end result to unpack. The viewer is placed at the centre of the inextricable search for the most direct way to capture and communicate the origins of art, amidst Orlovska’s dissatisfaction with the square of a canvas.

The artist finds consolation in sound. The sonic qualities of her installations fill the opening abyss of artistic communication.

Orlovska obtained a MA degree in painting from the Vilnius Academy of Arts (2023), built on her BA studies in painting at the Academy (2021).
