Henrik B. Andersen Danish, b. 1958
Henrik B. Andersen develops a sculptural language in which scientific thought and physical form remain inseparable.
Henrik B. Andersen is a Danish sculptor whose work investigates how contemporary scientific thought can be translated into sculpture. Working across figurative and abstract forms, he develops structures that challenge inherited ideas of representation while remaining grounded in the physical presence of materials.
Since the 1980s, Andersen has developed a sculptural practice that moves between geometry and organic form, precision and ambiguity. His works draw on mathematics and the history of sculpture, proposing objects that are formally rigorous while remaining sensually immediate. Rather than illustrating scientific ideas, they translate them into spatial experience.
Henrik B. Andersen studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under Willy Ørskov and Hein Heinsen. From 1999 to 2008 he was Professor of Sculpture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, and since 2008 has been Professor at the Vilnius Academy of Arts. His work has been exhibited at institutions including the National Gallery of Denmark (Copenhagen), ARoS Aarhus Art Museum (Aarhus), Louisiana Museum of Modern Art (Copenhagen), Charlottenborg Kunsthal (Copenhagen), Trapholt Museum (Kolding), and Galerija VARTAI (Vilnius).
Henrik B. Andersen is represented by Galerija VARTAI.

ARTISTIC PRACTICE
Henrik B. Andersen approaches sculpture as a way of thinking through form. Rather than treating scientific knowledge as something to be illustrated, he asks how new understandings of space and matter might generate an entirely different sculptural language.
His works move between recognisable and abstract forms without settling fully into either. Organic structures, fragments of the body, and geometric forms are brought into relation through compositions that appear carefully ordered while resisting fixed interpretation. The sculptures invite prolonged looking, revealing themselves through shifts in scale, movement, and proximity.
Scientific thought has remained a constant point of departure throughout Andersen's practice, especially ideas drawn from mathematics and theories of complexity. These references do not function as subjects in themselves but as methods for organising form. Sculpture becomes a field in which relationships between mass, void, and instability can be experienced directly.
His sculptures do not represent scientific ideas; they allow them to be encountered through material form.
