Indrė Rybakovaitė, the recipient of the "Zabolis Art Prize'24," delves into the concept of the uncanny in her compelling painting series “Places of Change.” This project investigates the unsettling psychological state encapsulated by the German term "Unheimliche," which evokes feelings of uncertainty and anxiety about one's reality and experiences.

Over three years, Rybakovaitė visited around twenty diverse locations, including war and military history museums, memorial sites, and places of memory. Her work captures the complex atmospheres of these spaces, shaped by intangible elements like genius loci, weather, and personal narratives, as well as more identifiable factors such as aesthetic codes and the role of museums in shaping historical narratives.

Rybakovaitė’s paintings aim to convey the rich atmospheres and subtle anxieties of our time, forging a deep connection between the viewer and the nuanced experience of the uncanny. Her extensive education includes studies at the National M. K. Čiurlionis School of Arts, Vilnius Academy of Arts, Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design, and Dresden University of Fine Arts.

Rybakovaitė’s work has been showcased in numerous exhibitions across Europe, establishing her as a significant emerging voice in contemporary art.
