Monika Radžiūnaitė's work, "Inner peace - is a strength / Is fortitudinem interiorem pacem," belongs to the "Circumstances" series.
"Pliny the Elder documented all sorts of creatures from every corner of the world, perhaps even having witnessed them himself. It's said he saw the eruption of Mount Vesuvius with his own eyes and organised what could be considered the first rescue mission for the event, which may even have cost him his life – he passed away the following day from a heart attack and was left somewhere near the city of Stabiae. A year ago, it was announced that scientists even found his head.
Equally detached is the head of this panther, an animal described by Pliny in his work Naturalis Historia, which was exceptionally popular during the Middle Ages.
He claimed that people killed panthers purely for pleasure, but he also stated that they could be saved from death by giving them human excrement to taste. However, Pliny wrote, they are too foolish and lack the memory to share this knowledge with each other, and therefore don't save themselves.
In the Middle Ages, other facts were known about panthers. For instance, that they were friends with all animals except dragons. It was written that their eyes consisted of circles, and in various bestiaries, they were depicted as spotted or as colourful as Joseph's coat. Generally, the panther is mentioned as representing Jesus Christ due to its gentleness. For example, upon waking, it lets out a loud roar, and a sweet scent emanates from its open mouth. Other animals, hearing its voice, travel towards it, led by that fragrance."
