The artwork was exhibited at the exhibition "Embracement" (2021.09.09 - 10.23), dedicated to the centenary of the birth of the famous Lithuanian modernist artist Antanas Mončys.
Deimantas Narkevičius’s Flute Player creates several sonic states which he has derived from an archival photographic image reproduced in different materials. A photograph from 1920 depicts a young man dressed in military uniform playing a flute, facing away from a frosty window, through which we can see a winter garden contained in a glass conservatory. The image gives us an opportunity to guess what kinds of sounds this young man may be creating. Accompanying this image are the bronze castings of the internal cavities of the musician’s instrument. The interior of the flute was cast in four parts, just as the instrument itself would be assembled or disassembled. In addition, a holographic screen shows a flying nightingale. Through its size and motion, the digital bird extends the scene of the black-and-white photograph into an animated space against a green background: presumably flying in from the conservatory, the holographic bird, paired with the sounds performed by the flute player, echoes the rhythm and melodies of nightingale song. A second photograph, created digitally, depicts what might have been visible from the outside: a window in the wall of a house, in which we see a soldier playing music in an unknown location.
