Geistė Marija Kinčinaitytė Lithuanian, b. 1991
Geistė Marija Kinčinaitytė creates photographs and moving image works in which familiar worlds gradually become unfamiliar.
Geistė Marija Kinčinaitytė is a Lithuanian artist, researcher, and lecturer working across photography, moving image, and installation. Describing herself as an "alien anthropologist," she investigates how images reshape our experience of bodies, landscapes, and the environments we inhabit. Her practice moves between intimate bodily experience and planetary scale, allowing the familiar to become quietly estranged. Human skin, geological surfaces, remote landscapes, and extraterrestrial terrains appear with equal uncertainty, asking what it means to perceive and belong in a world increasingly experienced through images. Carefully constructed installations extend this atmosphere, using colour, darkness, and spatial composition to shape the act of looking itself.
Geistė Marija Kinčinaitytė holds a PhD in Film and Screen Studies from the University of Cambridge, as well as an MA and BA from Goldsmiths, University of London. Her work has been presented internationally at institutions including The Photographers' Gallery (London), Fotogalleriet (Oslo), National Center of Photography and Images (Taipei), The Museum of Photography (Seoul), MO Museum (Vilnius), and Galerija VARTAI.
Geistė Marija Kinčinaitytė is represented by Galerija VARTAI.

ARTISTIC PRACTICE
Geistė Marija Kinčinaitytė works at the edge of what photography can make familiar. Across photography, moving image, and installation, she creates images that resist immediate orientation, allowing bodies, landscapes, and planetary environments to shift gradually into one another. Research forms the foundation of her practice, but it is never separated from the image itself. Philosophy and fieldwork inform works that remain grounded in atmosphere rather than illustration. Photography becomes less a means of recording the world than of questioning how the world is perceived. Many of Kinčinaitytė's projects begin in places that exist at the limits of human experience — volcanic landscapes, deserts, or planetary imagery. Rather than presenting these environments as distant or spectacular, she draws them into intimate proximity, revealing unexpected connections between geological formations, technological vision, and the human body. Across her installations, image, colour, darkness, and sound are composed as a single environment. The works invite viewers to linger in states of uncertainty, where distinctions between the terrestrial and the extraterrestrial, the organic and the technological, remain deliberately unresolved.
