Kotryna Butautytė’s "Collateral Nr. 2 Bench" reflects the artist’s fascination with the uncontrollable factors that emerge during the design process. Born in 1992 in Lithuania and a graduate of the Vilnius Academy of Arts in Design Studies, Butautytė has developed a unique approach to domestic objects, focusing on the intersection between functionality and the unexpected variables that shape a design’s outcome.
In "Collateral Nr. 2 Bench", Butautytė explores the tension between purposeful construction and the influence of external, often random, elements. The bench, while serving its practical role as seating, also becomes a commentary on the unpredictable nature of creation. Through clean lines and a minimalist aesthetic, the work subtly embraces imperfections or chance occurrences that influence its final form. This interplay between control and serendipity is central to Butautytė’s practice, where functional objects are not only tools for daily life but also reflections on the design process itself.
The "Collateral Nr. 2 Bench" invites users to engage with both its utilitarian aspect and its conceptual depth, encouraging reflection on how design is shaped by factors beyond the designer’s control. Butautytė’s work transforms simple furniture into a thoughtful dialogue about creation, functionality, and the beauty found in unexpected outcomes.
