The artwork was created especially for the exhibition "Embracement" (2021.09.09 - 10.23), dedicated to the centenary of the birth of the famous Lithuanian modernist artist Antanas Mončys.
Laurynas Skeisgiela presents a series of slowly blinking objects based on the natural phenomenon of mimicry – a widespread protective strategy, which has evolved in a way that allows organisms to mimic the appearance of other creatures and environments. Colour and shape, in particular, are usually the most effective means to convey or be protected from danger, be it real or false. Our built environment often uses similar mechanisms to signal danger in signs of warning and important emergency situation, such as fire escape signs. Bright synthetic colours and abstract forms can be seen hanging in the corridors of public spaces, designed to efficiently guide us through a space in instances of emergency or to control our movements for safety and security. Titled Liump!, this object series camouflages these signs, replacing warning signals with eye-catching, attractive shapes, stripping signs associated with emergency of their function and turning them into extravagant decorative interior pieces.
